PERA Annual Retirees Statement FAQ’s
I have questions about my post-retirement insurance. Whom should I contact?

When will PERA mail my tax document for the year?
PERA mails the 1099R forms on or before the last working day in January. PERA retirees with a RIO Self-Service account can also download up to three years of 1099R forms online. Please update any changes to your mailing address prior to January 1st of each year.

How do I change my post-retirement beneficiary designation?
Please visit the �Deselection Process� tab.
I was divorced post-retirement. What�s next?
Please provide a court-endorsed final decree, marital settlement agreement, any order from a judge modify your retirement benefits.
How do I update my direct deposit?
You may change your direct deposit designation any time. A new PERA Direct Deposit form received by the 15th of the month will be effective for the payment made on the last working day of that month. Please remember to attach a voided check or deposit slip from your financial institution to the form when you submit it. Please submit the signed, completed form via email, fax, mail, in-person or by uploading it to your RIO Self-Service account or via PERA�s Secure File Upload feature.
How do I open an encrypted email sent to me by NM PERA?

How do I obtain an income verification letter or a duplicate/replacement 1099R?
A benefit recipient can call, email or visit PERA to request either document. PERA retirees who have created a RIO Self-Service account can access these documents via their account. After the retiree has logged into their RIO Self Service account, they will see the Current Pension Details page. It provides their Pension Check Information, Tax Data and Pension Amount Details. At the bottom of the page, see �Related Links� to view/print an Income Verification Letter, COLA Letters, and 1099R Forms for the last three years (if applicable).
How do I report a death to PERA?
Contact the call center at Toll-Free: 1 (866) 678-0670 or visit the Life Events tab on PERA�s website. You will also be asked to provide a death certificate.
What can be deducted
from my monthly pension?
Your monthly benefit payment is calculated in the pre-tax, pre-insurance (gross) form. PERA can withhold, with your written permission, federal tax, New Mexico state tax, and after-tax New Mexico Retiree Health Care Authority premiums. If you elect not to have any of these items withheld, it is your responsibility to make payment arrangements with the appropriate entity. Please note that PERA cannot provide guidance related to tax withholding for your PERA pension benefit. PERA may also withhold any amount specified in a child support, spousal support, or tax levy court order.
How do I update my tax withholding?
A.You may change your withholding status at any time. A new PERA Income Tax Withholding form received by the 15th of the month will be effective for the payment made on the last working day of that month. Please submit the signed, completed form via email, fax, mail, in-person or by uploading it to your RIO Self-Service account or via PERA�s Secure File Upload feature. For reference a tax calculation feature is built in to your RIO Self-Service account (not available to beneficiary or co-payee benefit recipients.)
